Happy Holidays from the RCMP.

It is now that time of year again where the snow has fallen, the coco is hot and the presents have been wrapped and placed under the tree. The RCMP would like to extend to all of its citizens in Liberty City to have a safe and happy holiday period.

The schools are closed and business close down for the holidays. The Emergency Services including the RCMP, LCAS and LCFR continue to operate. Whilst many of you will be enjoying your holidays with your families, many men and woman will be away from theirs ensuring the safety of yours.

The RCMP and its brothers and sisters in LCFR and LCAS are reminding you to stay safe this holiday season and are giving you some important safety tips they recommend you to follow.

Around The House.
  • Remove snow and ice, and put sand or salt on walkways and driveways. Arrange to have this done even when you are away and for a neighbour to pick-up your mail.
  • Discard packaging from big ticket items carefully, bundling cardboard boxes to conceal the nature of their contents.
  • Keep a record of your valuables.
  • Identify property by engraving an identifying mark.

    Decorations
  • Choose ones that are flame retardant, non-combustible, and non-conductive.
  • Avoid the highly combustible combination of angel hair (glass wool) and spray snow.
  • Use Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certified lights and string sets and make sure they are the proper lights for the environment. Outside lights may burn too hot for indoor use and indoor lights are not weatherproof.
  • Be careful not to overload electrical outlets.
  • Cut candle wicks short to prevent high flame.

    Driving.
  • Wear your seatbelt correctly. Lap belts should be low and snug over the hips, while shoulder belts should be worn across the chest.
  • Use a restraint system that is appropriate for your child’s height and weight. Remember, the safest place for children 12 and under is in the rear side of your vehicle.
  • Install 4 identical snow tires.
  • Clear all snow and ice from all windows, hood, roof, and lights before driving.
  • Make sure you have lots of windshield fluid.
  • Keep an emergency kit and warm blankets in the trunk.
  • Let someone know your travel plans before you leave and be aware of travel and road conditions.

If a crime has been committed at your home.
  • Use your cell or a neighbour’s phone to call the police.
  • Do NOT touch anything or clean up until the police have inspected for evidence.
  • Note the license plate number of any suspicious vehicles.
  • Note the description of any suspicious person(s).

The RCMP would also like to recommend if you plan on drinking this holiday season please drink responsibly and don't get behind the wheel, you won't just ruin your holidays but may be someone else's too. If you are drinking, give your keys to someone who isn't, arrange a ride home with someone who hasn't drunk alcohol or call a taxi. If you are with someone who wants to drive home after drinking and refuses to give up their keys or arrange another way home, call the police. If you are with someone who is drunk and acting inappropriately call the police to help.

The Emergency Services are here for you 24/7 including over the holiday period. They work to ensure your health and safety to make sure you can have a happy holiday time with your family.

So please remember the police officers, the firefighters, the paramedics, the doctors, the nurses and all other the emergency service workers these holidays.
